During "BioAsia 2004" held at the historic city of Hyderabad in February 2004, leaders of delegation of 8 Asian countries (India, Israel, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand) met and declared formation of "Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA)" with a view to create a common platform for development of biotechnology in Asian countries. During “BioAsia 2005”, FABA was formally launched by Dr. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Hon'ble Cheif Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Prof. M K Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and Patron of FABA in the presence of Dr. Anwar Nasim, Chairman, National Commission on Biotechnology of Pakistan. Islamabad, Pakistan and President, FABA, Dr. B S Bajaj, Chairman, All India Biotech Association – Southern Chapter and Secretary General, FABA and Mr. B P Acharya, Secretary to Government of Andhra Pradesh and Patron of FABA by releasing logo of FABA. Subsequently Iran and Saudi Arabia also joined FABA raising the membership to 10. China, Japan, Yemen and some other countries are under enrolement.
FABA was registered under Indian Societies Act on November 26, 2004 (Registration Number 1810), after submission of Memorandum & Articles of Association.
The decision and the declaration of forming the "Federation of Asian Biotech Associations (FABA)" was hailed as a land mark decision and got extensive publicity in several countries including a prominent news item in Nature Biotechnology (22, 371-374 (2004), doi:10.1038/nbt0404-371) published from the UK.
